Preserve and pass on

Start learning Buryat

Choose one situation in which you want to speak: introducing yourself, talking with relatives or everyday tasks. Here is a simple first-session plan and a few resources to return to.

Your first result

Five words or short expressions with sources, one question for a teacher and a time for your next session.

  1. Choose your goal

Write down whom you want to speak with and what about. If your family’s or locality’s speech matters to you, ask your conversation partner which forms they use. You do not need to start by learning an entire dictionary.

  2. Use a textbook alongside a dictionary

Open the alphabet section in Burlang.Nom, then choose five words for your topic in a dictionary. Keep a link to each example. Distinguish dictionary entries from machine translations a service may display alongside them.

  3. Listen and ask

If the material has a recording, listen first and note what is unclear. Ask a teacher or Buryat speaker to check pronunciation and whether the expression fits the situation. Do not treat automatic speech as a model without checking it.

  4. Return to the same words

As a starting routine, try ten minutes on days that suit you: recall words without hints, check the entry and use one expression. Buryads word packs can help with revision. This is a suggested routine, not a promise of progress by a deadline.

Questions for your notes

  • What conversation am I preparing for?
  • Where is the example recorded, and who helped check it?
  • What will I ask at my next session?

Resources for your first step

Burlang.Nom textbook ↗

Start with the contents: the alphabet, sounds, then the grammar section you need.

Explanations are in Russian. This is an external textbook, not a Buryat Global course.

Burlang.Toli ↗

Look up your chosen word and keep the source. The service also displays machine translations.

The dictionary helps with lookup; check usage and pronunciation separately.

Buryads.com / t.bur.mn ↗

Choose a themed word pack and try revision through games or a quiz.

An independent external project. Its site warns that translations may be inaccurate; no partnership with Buryat Global is claimed.

Help preserve knowledge

Know a useful lesson or found an error in a language resource? Suggest a public link, its author and a brief explanation. Voice recordings need a separate discussion first.

Prepare a contribution

Contributions are not published automatically. The editor first discusses the source and conditions.

Buryat from scratch: a plan for your first sessions

This is an editorial sequence of independent steps. It does not replace a course or promise fluency in a week; choose your pace with a teacher or conversation partner.

  1. Session 1 — letters. Open the alphabet chart, find Ө, Ү and Һ, and copy one line from a learning text. Compare every letter with the original.
  2. Session 2 — listening. Use a short lesson recording or ask a teacher to read the same passage. Mark the parts you cannot yet distinguish by ear.
  3. Session 3 — one situation. Choose a greeting from the phrasebook, clarify its context and practise a short exchange. Write down a question that arises.
  4. Session 4 — dictionary and review. Look up a few words from the same material. Keep the sources, repeat the passage and decide what to study next.

How to recognise progress

Compare concrete tasks: can you read a familiar line, look up a word and ask about an unclear passage? If your family speaks differently, keep both forms with explanations. Do not correct family speech solely on the basis of one textbook example.
