This period does not search for a single ancestor of the Buryats. Archaeological cultures, migrations, ecological practices and later genealogical traditions are treated as different kinds of evidence. An archaeological culture, a population, a language, a genealogical tradition and a modern ethnic identity are different kinds of evidence. This section does not call archaeological cultures "Buryat" and does not project later group names into the deep past.
